FAQ
DAK's FAQs
Commonly asked questions about the products and services Decks by DAK provides.
Should I go with wood or composite decking?
Wood is less expensive but requires regular maintenance, which makes it roughly the same price as composite after about six years. Our Trex composite decking never requires staining and is also tree-free. Some people like the look of real wood and are okay with annual maintenance and staining — we're happy to build either, and we'll talk through the tradeoffs based on your specific situation.
Is composite decking hotter than real wood?
The darker the composite materials used, the hotter the deck — same goes for a wood deck painted a dark color. If your deck is going to be in direct sunlight most of the day and you want to walk barefoot on it, we recommend a lighter Trex material. The three lighter colors are very similar in heat performance.
The Spiced Rum and Lava Rock boards are the hotter planks; the Island Mist, Tiki Torch, and Havana Gold are cooler.
How do I maintain and clean my Trex deck?
To clean your Trex deck, lightly scrub it with water and dish soap once a year. We do not recommend using a high-power pressure washer. Trex is designed to be very low maintenance.
Will Decks by DAK do hardscaping?
We're set up to make your deck build or replacement as seamless as possible. While we don't personally do major hardscaping projects related to your home and deck, we have a selection of preferred contractors that work well with our design process.
What is the DAK Difference and build process?
- Initial phone consultation to see if we're what you're looking for.
- You provide a picture of your current deck (which we're rebuilding) or where you'd like your new deck — with rough dimensions.
- If there's interest after the initial estimate, we schedule an on-site estimate and consultation.
- We review the estimate and contract together. If accepted — next step.
- We require ⅓ due at signing in order to schedule the build.
- After the job is complete we do a final walkthrough and explanation of warranty.
